Religious Education (R.E)

At Albemarle, we aim to nurture the children on their path to becoming responsible, reflective, and compassionate individuals who are inspired by learning about themselves and others.

Intent

At Albemarle, our relevant and creative Religious Education curriculum aims to engage children to enquire and explore the many questions about the study of religion and belief. Lessons aim to provide children with an understanding and knowledge, that will prepare them to be caring, open minded members of our multicultural society, and the diverse community in which they live. To promote their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, we actively celebrate diversity and offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for all children. Our goal is to develop the children’s understanding of cultural diversity so that they are able to respect and understand multiple faiths.

Implementation

Our curriculum at Albemarle implements the learning outcomes of the Wandsworth Locally Agreed Syllabus for RE (2017). Lessons are carefully planned, supplemented by the Essex scheme of work, to provide an engaging curriculum that touches on a wide coverage of faiths as it progresses throughout the key stages. Through engaging lessons children will learn about and from religion and beliefs. Our practical approach gives the children the opportunity to experience religions through visits to places of worship, handling of religious artefacts, and meeting individuals of significant religious standing. Topics are taught on a half-termly basis, with each class enjoying RE once a week. Students are continually assessed on their knowledge of different beliefs, practices and how these influence individuals and communities. Children are encouraged to consider different points of view, and as they move through the key stages, use evidence to support their arguments and recognise the differences that can occur in interpretations religious sources.

Impact

At Albemarle, Religious Education nurtures the children on their path to becoming responsible, reflective, and compassionate individuals, who are inspired by learning about themselves and others. We provide our children with a curriculum that challenges them to learn about and from a range of religious and non-religious values. As a result, the children are equipped to explore the meaning of their own existence and purpose in life, by reflecting on their understanding of family, culture, community, and the diverse world they live in. By the time children leave Albemarle they will have had many opportunities to question, make informed choices and make personal conclusions based on their knowledge and understanding. Thus, preparing each child for the ever- changing world ahead of them.
