History

History:

At Albemarle, we provide a wide range of opportunities for children, which enable them to develop a natural curiosity, but to also learn about the foundations of the past that have built the world in which they live.

Intent:

At Albemarle Primary School, we aim for all learners to experience an ambitious, culturally diverse History curriculum, which inspires pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the past. Children are encouraged to explore the subject from a critical viewpoint, examining key aspects of the world’s history and understand how specific events have contributed to their lives now. Fundamentally, we aim for our children to develop a love for learning and natural curiosity for the past in order for them to make connections to the present, understand their place in the world as a global citizen and understand how History may influence their future.

Implementation:

We view History as more than facts and dates. Our curriculum follows an enquiry-based approach and we encourage children to become detectives, who explore and question the past in an exciting way. In each year group, children are taught three different history topics a year, each over duration of a half term. Our teachers make learning memorable and fun through drama and role play, reading stories and writing opportunities. When relevant, pupils are given opportunities to carry out fieldwork in the local area, interview older local residents, go on educational visits to local sites of historical importance or museums, where students can handle artefacts first hand and experience specialist teaching by historians or curators.

Impact:

The learning journey of the school’s history curriculum is evident in children’s history books, which demonstrate a broad and balanced history curriculum and a clear progression of the children’s key knowledge and skills. By the end of year 6, children will have a chronological understanding of British history from the Stone Age to the present day. Interlinked with this are studies of world history, such as the ancient civilisations of Greece, Egyptians and early Islamic civilisations. Children are given opportunities to reflect on what they have learned at the end of every topic. Most importantly, by the end of their time at Albemarle, we want all of our children to develop a lifelong love for learning and support them to become independent learners who are ready for secondary school and will become articulate and responsible members of our society today.
