Physical Education (P.E)

At Albemarle Primary School we believe that Physical Education contributes significantly to children’s learning and development across physical, social, emotional and cognitive domains.

Intent:

Physical Education (PE) that is experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical, emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. The ongoing holistic development of children is at the forefront of our curriculum, including skills to keep them safe, such as the ability to swim. Collaboration with others as part of an effective team, the ability to motivate themselves and others as well as understanding fairness and the equity of play are fundamental goals of our curriculum. Improving the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Albemarle, not only through the sporting skills taught is a key focus for our school.

Implementation:

PE at Albemarle provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities (OAA). The long term plan sets out the PE units, which are to be taught throughout the year and ensuring that children experience a wide range of activity. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. There is a varied range of extra-curricular activities in the form of after-school sport clubs that take place to supplement this. Children attend competitive sporting events within the local area, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being but also develop teamwork and leadership skills. School-wide ‘Fitness days’ are held termly, encouraging the love for sport and physical activity whilst promoting and encouraging the health benefits of regular exercise and healthy eating. On such days, children attend a multitude of exercises, games, fitness drills and aerobics classes.

Impact:

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. Albemarle’s school values are taught and encouraged discreetly within PE lessons and children have a firm grasp of what ‘taking-risks’ means within their PE lessons, for instance. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. Through this, they will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE at Albemarle as a platform from which to build upon in secondary school and beyond.
