P.S.H.E

Personal, Social & Health Education (P.S.H.E)

At Albemarle, P.S.H.E is a vital tool in progressing each child's personal development and character. We are proud to offer a wide range of curriculum opportunities that are underpinned by our Core Values to support this aim.

Intent:

At Albemarle Primary school, we aim to provide children with the essential skills and knowledge they require to be successful learners and well-rounded individuals. We strive equip our children with a broad range of tools to help them progress as resilient, independent and reflective learners when they leave Albemarle and head in to a new chapter of their lives. These skills are acquired and taught through the delivery of our eight core values, which underpin everything we do as a school, alongside our carefully selected PSHE and RSE programme - Jigsaw.

Implementation:

PSHE underpins many aspects of our children’s learning at Albemarle and is taught in different ways throughout the school day. Through our carefully selected PSHE/RSE programme, Jigsaw, we aim to provide children with a thorough understanding of how they think, feel and relate to those around them as well as equipping them with the information they need to look after and understand their own bodies and form healthy relationships:

“Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive Programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus."

These sessions are taught weekly throughout the school from the very youngest children in Nursery to those about to leave Albemarle in Year 6. In the EYFS, Personal, Social and Emotional Development is a Prime Area of Learning which is developed in a variety of different ways such as circle times, the promotion of a growth mind set and games to aid with turn-taking skills and emotional regulation. We also have whole school and key stage assemblies throughout the week, which bring the children together to explore key issues in our community, reflect on world events and celebrate each other’s achievements.

Impact:

Our holistic, fun and engaging approach to PSHE and RSE at Albemarle helps foster positive relationships throughout the school whilst simultaneously developing confidence and strengthening resilience in our learners. By using Jigsaw continuously and consistently throughout the school, the children develop a shared language and understanding of who they are and how they think, enabling them to take risks and face challenges head on. Our children leave Albemarle as confident, lifelong learners equipped with the tools they need to thrive in any environment.
