Computing

Computing

Computing capability is an essential skill for life and enables learners to participate more readily in a rapidly changing world.

Intent:

Computing capability is an essential skill for life and enables learners to participate more readily in a rapidly changing world.

At Albemarle, we aspire to provide all children with not only the skills to use a range of technology, but also the gain of life-long thinking skills and a love for learning, to continue to develop their passion for computing, through Albemarle and beyond.

We aim to enhance and extend children’s learning across the key units: ‘Computing systems and networks’, ‘Creating media’, ‘Programming’ and ‘Data and information’. E-Safety underpins and is embedded throughout our curriculum, reflecting the importance of our school core values.

We believe that all children should gain the confidence and skills they need to prepare themselves to be safe, active and responsible participants in this digital world. Through stimulating and challenging experiences, our children will continue to develop their love for learning and become confident and independent users of technology.

Implementation:

Computing at Albemarle follows carefully planned, structured and progressive lessons. The units of work centre on a spiral curriculum. This means that each theme is revisited regularly, consolidated throughout new units and builds on prior learning. This style of curriculum design reduces the amount of knowledge lost through forgetting.

Computing is embedded in simple steps throughout our Early Years to support learning across the curriculum; for example, children in Nursery begin Autumn 1 with managing their feelings and understanding how to keep themselves safe. Computing is taught weekly in KS1 and KS2, with a focused unit per half term, including ‘Stop-frame animation’ and ‘Robot algorithms’.

Impact:

Our progressive, engaging and challenging computing lessons help children to consolidate their learning, further their thinking and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to become active and responsible participants in this digital world. It provides our children with not only the technical skills to use a range of technology, but also the life-long critical thinking skills and love for learning to continue to develop their passion for computing.
