Art

Art

At Albemarle, Art is taught alongside Design & Technology throughout the children's Lower and Upper School learning journey. We are passionate about developing our children's enthusiasm and love for the arts. Staff actively encourage an appreciation for a diverse range of artistic pieces.

Intent:

At Albemarle Primary School, we recognise that Art and Design stimulates a love for learning and independence. We aim to teach our children about a diverse range of artists and help them make connections between an artist’s work and their contribution to society. We aim to provide a curriculum that allows children to practice and revisit a wide variety of artistic disciplines so that each child is able to appreciate a progressive range of skills.

Implementation:

At Albemarle, lessons follow a systematic structure that begins with an introduction and immersion to a new artist and artistic style for each term. Children are exposed to a diverse range of artists and are encouraged to articulately discuss their opinions of each artist’s chosen piece of work to deepen their knowledge of each topic. After learning about their chosen artist, children are taught specific skills and enjoy opportunities to experiment and practice in the style of their artist. Lessons allow children to take risks when planning and choose which skill they want to include in their final piece of art. Children then independently design and create with their chosen selected skills and complete their final piece. Finally, children evaluate their pieces and are reflective towards their compositions and the skills they have developed, as they discuss their views of their own work, comparing it back to the initial work of their artist.

Impact:

Our children confidently develop knowledge and skills outlined in the National Curriculum for Art and Design. Children leave Albemarle with the knowledge of a diverse bank of great artists and craft makers and an understanding and appreciation for a variety of artistic styles. The children are reflective, respective and articulate when critiquing their own work and the work of others. Through independently choosing skills for each final piece of work, children are able to discover their own talents and gain the confidence to make their own decisions and adapt them to new artistic challenges.
