M.F.L

Modern Foreign Languages (M.F.L)

At Albemarle, we consistently promote the study of a foreign language because of its increasing importance in both personal development and in global society.

Intent

Our intent is to provide a high quality provision so that all pupils benefit from the unique social and educational advantages and experiences, that learning a language can bring. We aim to provide pupils with a grounding of skills and knowledge in linguistic competence in Spanish whilst also promoting a positive attitude towards linguistic diversity and the learning of other languages of the world.

Implementation

Albemarle’s M.F.L curriculum is engaging, progressive and communicates to pupils the principles and benefits to language learning. Our children begin their weekly Spanish lessons in the Summer Term of Year 1 all the way through to Year 6 and our lessons are taught by specialist Spanish teachers. In Key Stage One, the children enjoy learning basic skills and phrases and learn these through songs and interactive games. Across Key Stage Two, the children build on these skills by listening, reciting and completing activities that facilitate language learning so that as the children progress, they are able to recognise, read and then write words and simple phrases in Spanish.

Impact

At Albemarle, the impact we hope to achieve is to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written Spanish, confidence to speak in Spanish with others and an understanding of how important other languages can be in their future.
